Lawmakers block New Hampshire bill banning some utility mergers

An effort to forbid water utilities in New Hampshire from merging with electric or gas utilities failed to advance in a recent vote.

Rep. Robert Renny Cushing, D-Hampton, sponsored the legislation, House Bill 1644. During floor debate, he said the bill was prompted by his surprise when Eversource Energy announced in June 2017 that it was acquiring Aquarion Water Company for $1.7 billion. | More at NH Watchdog

Republican Majority Congress is Preparing to “Enhance” Background Checks

When Congress passed national reciprocity, it also passed Fix NICS legislation. At the time Rep. Massie warned that in the US Senate, as soon as there was another shooting, Senate Republicans would drop reciprocity and bring Fix NICS to the floor. When it got back to the House, Leadership would say, you passed this before…and that’s what they are doing. | More at GraniteGrok.com

School Choice for NH: Schedule for Week of March 5, 2018

The legislature has its winter break this week and will resume the week of March 5. All of our bills have been exec’d in committees and several will likely have votes in the NH House of Representatives at their next session. Unfortunately, we had mixed results that show some Reps believe accountability is not to families, but to the state. The next step is to contact your own representatives, asking them to either support or oppose the committees’ recommendations. | More at School Choice for NH

Lame Duck Carol Shea-Porter Signs on To Latest “Assault Weapons” Ban

Democrat New Hampshire district one congressmember Carol Shea-Porter has signed on as a co-sponsor of a bill to ban “assault weapons.”

In a press release, she said that “gun massacres” increased by 183 percent after the federal ban expired in 2004. “One law can’t stop every mass shooting, but we can make them less deadly and less frequent,” she said. “These weapons of war were designed for military use and have one purpose: to kill lots of people quickly and easily. We need to take action now.”

As usual, she’s misleading. | More at GraniteGrok.com

J. Christian Adams and PILF have been successful in suing several states for public information each state is required to keep – that would be the Green Card holders who have driver’s licenses and the statewide voter database. Pa. has at least 100,000 non-citizens registered to vote through the Federal Motor Voter law. New Hampshire is required to keep these records as well. | Keep Reading at CNHT

Should delinquent taxpayers face 18 percent interest penalties?

During a recent discussion in the New Hampshire House, some representatives described homeowners who fall behind on property taxes largely as people who may be in a rough stretch due to unemployment, illness or age – but others saw those same citizens as simply shirking responsibility and using their local municipality as a de facto, unwilling lender. | More at NH Watchdog

The Trans-Bill is Back and There’s Gonna Be Trouble…

The Trans-Bill is back (HB 1319) as Kimberly Morin joins me to talk about the legislation, how it threatens actual rights, violates women’s privacy, carves out special exceptions, and why we don’t even need it. | More at GraniteGrok.com
