John McCain diagnosed with brain cancer

Six-term Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the influential Republican who has clashed with presidents of both parties over national security and foreign policy, has been diagnosed with brain cancer, his office said in a statement Wednesday night.

The cancer was discovered after minor surgery last week to remove a blood clot above the left eye of the 80-year-old chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, according to the Mayo Clinic. | More…

Oregon peddles bicycle tax – bike-crazy riders deflated

In Oregon, a state known for its avid bicycling culture, the state Legislature’s approval of the first statewide bike tax in the nation has fallen flat with riders.

Democratic Gov. Kate Brown is expected to sign the sweeping $5.3 billion transportation package, which includes a $15 excise tax on the sale of bicycles costing more than $200 with a wheel diameter of at least 26 inches.

Even though the funding has been earmarked for improvements that will benefit cyclists, the tax has managed to irk both anti-tax Republicans and environmentally conscious bikers.

BikePortland publisher Jonathan Maus called it “an unprecedented step in the wrong direction.” | More…

Gay Lobby Mega-Donor: “We’re Going to Punish the Wicked”

Tim Gill is a major donor to Democrat’s, the backbone of the gay-lobby, and has been at the forefront of funding gay marriage and other LGBT initiatives across America. What’s his next target?

Anyone who intends to hide behind their first amendment right of association, free speech, and religious liberty are in his crosshairs. He’s prepared to spend every dime in his foundations, and this is a quote, “to punish the wicked.” | More…

Manchester Bitcoin Vending Machine Adds DASH, Making NH #1 For DASH Vending

With all the Bitcoin drama going on, it’s easy to get distracted from what is important. What is important, whether Bitcoin stays on top or not, is the idea of cryptocurrency, of which Bitcoin was the first. While I personally believe Bitcoin can survive its internal turmoil, I could be wrong. After all, no one buys the Model T these days, even though it was the first car. The Model T is a clunker compared to what we have now. | More…

Memorials promote ‘white heterosexual male supremacy,’ profs claim

Public museums and memorials serve our nation’s “foundational commitments to white heterosexual male supremacy,” according to two Texas A&M University professors.

Tasha N. Dubriwny and Kristan Poirot, both of whom teach Women’s Studies at TAMU, advanced the claim in a July 12 article in the Southern Communications Journal, further alleging that U.S commemorative practices serve an inherently conservative agenda. | More…

Donna Green: Behind the Scenes of Policy Committee

As the assigned school board head of Timberlane’s Policy Standing Committee, I have been trying to hold summer meetings.  Policy formation is one of the principal duties of the School Board, yet the established schedule of Policy Committee meetings is one hour, once per month, for 10 months out of 12.  By current policy, a majority of the committee consists of administrators, which means administrators can block a quorum and stonewall meetings. | More…

So It’s OK to Ignore Trump’s Politics If it Can Help You Sell More Doughnuts?

Meredith couple brings doughnuts to White House
Take part in Trump’s ‘Made in America’ event

When Rob and Jessica Stevens were notified last Friday that their Meredith-based Cider Bellies Doughnuts would represent New Hampshire as part of a “Made In America” event Monday at the White House, they were honored though not necessarily thrilled by its occupant. …

“I don’t agree with a lot of things Trump stands for,” added Jessica. “But take the politics out of it. We need to respect what employers do every day and to try to keep things in America. If you don’t want to buy a doughnut because we went to White House, that’s your prerogative, but this was just about celebrating business.” | More…
