Keene New Hampshire’s Got Gas And It Makes Them Uncomfortable

The company runs a plant that pumps a propane-air mixture direct by pipe to businesses and residents downtown, as well as to some big box stores in a shopping center about a 10-minute drive away. Eventually, the company wants to switch that whole system over to natural gas. But at the meeting, it was just looking for approval to switch the big box stores over this fall.

Just before the vote, City Councilor Terry Clark urged his colleagues to turn it down. For Clark and others, it’s a simple argument: given the reality of climate change today, leaders need to put their foot down against any new investment in fossil fuels. | More…

Why Albany NH Struggles: Most of the Town is Federal Land

ALBANY — While the White Mountain National Forest brings thousands of recreation-minded visitors to the area each year, hosting the forest isn’t always fun for the small town of Albany.

Albany selectmen say the town has gotten overwhelmed by the cost and liability concerns surrounding the forest.  About 88 percent of the town is within the national forest, which spans a number of other local towns, including Conway, and into western Maine.

Albany — population 700 — totals about 51,623 acres; of those, 45,356 are national forest lands. | More…

Trump’s HHS to NH: End Illegal Medicaid Prop-Up Payments or Else

CONCORD — The Trump administration has given the state of New Hampshire until the end of 2018 to eliminate health care provider payments that support Medicaid expansion – or else face a “deferral or disallowance” of the entire New Hampshire Health Protection Program.

In a stunning Friday night development, Gov. Chris Sununu revealed since 2016 federal regulators have been investigating the legality of non-federal share financing of Medicaid expansion that the Republican-led Legislature and then-Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan put in place last year. *| More…

Media Noise Ignored

“They want politics to be going on everywhere all the time”, what does that remind you of? Safe spaces? Trigger words? Firing an employee for views not held by a company? Shouting down and silencing people whose view are not your own? Thought crimes?

This totally stinks of today. Where we’re demanded to accept that she is a he and he is a she and the use of the general neutral singular pronoun “he/his” is a slight. Where people wear black, assault people with views different from their own, damage and set ablaze other people’s property and then call themselves… anti-fascists? 2+2=5. | More…

If we normalize relations with North Korea, crappy regimes will recognize that nukes are the only viable insurance policy

If we normalize relations with North Korea, it will not suddenly embrace normal rules of trade and the free flow of capital and information for precisely the reasons I laid out above: Doing so would undermine the power of the regime as literally personified by Kim Jong-un. The more likely scenario is that Kim would simply double and triple down on the strategy that has kept his family in power for generations. When crazy has worked for you all your life, you don’t abandon it. The Norks have been brazen outlaws for decades without a credible nuclear deterrent. Why do we assume they’ll become Swiss once they have one? | More…
