Claremont assistant mayor steps down

CLAREMONT – City councilors plan to appoint a new assistant mayor on or before their Sept. 20 meeting, Mayor Charlene Lovett said Friday.

Victor Bergeron, who has been assistant mayor for the past eight years, announced his resignation Wednesday.

“This has not been an easy decision for me to make,” Bergeron said, adding he and his wife had an opportunity to sell their house sooner than expected and plan to move to their home in Florida full-time for many reasons, but not because of the city’s taxes. *|more…

Vermont Man Held on Bail In Connection to Human Trafficking in New Hampshire

A Vermont man is being held on bail in connection with alleged human trafficking charges in New Hampshire, according to police.

Lebanon Police arrested Erik Polson, 72, of Chelsea, Vermont, on Thursday after he traveled to the area to allegedly meet up with an adult and juvenile for sexual contact.

Police said they had tracked Polson through social media while conducting investigations of people who were looking to victimize children. | More…

Most New Hampshire Residents Upbeat About Economy

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — A University of New Hampshire survey has found that a majority of residents are optimistic about the economy in the state, though Republicans are much more upbeat than Democrats.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled in the latest Business and Industry Association Report on Consumer Confidence said businesses in the state will prosper while 24 percent held mixed views and only 18 percent felt they would experience bad times. | More…

Concord police seeking man who stole CHaD ‘Donation Dinosaur’ from Walmart

CONCORD — Police are seeking help to find the man they say stole from the “Donation Dinosaur” to benefit the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD).

Concord police Lt. Sean Ford said the theft occurred at Walmart last Tuesday and the suspect also stole a crowbar from Walmart, presumably to pry open the donation prop and get at the money.

Officials found the damaged donation container close to the Loudon Road superstore and most of the money was missing. | More…

Newport Baptist Church Buys Claremont Building for $700

Claremont — The City Council has accepted a bid of $700 to sell the former Unitarian Universalist Church on Broad Street to Lake Sunapee Baptist Church of Newport.

Planning and Development Director Nancy Merrill said it was the only bid the city received on the building, which sits on about a quarter of an acre between the fire station and Fiske Free Library.

According to a National Register nomination on the Connecticut River Joint Commissions website, the church was first built in 1832 in a late Federal style, then remodeled in 1883 to Victorian Gothic, when the front tower was added. *| More…
