House Education Committee To Vote Tuesday, May 2
Call Committee Members Now About SB 43, Relative to Non-Academic Surveys

The House Education Committee will vote on Tuesday, May 2 on three bills: SB 43, relative to non-academic surveys; SB 44, relative to Common Core, and SB 8, a “Croydon bill.”

Action Item: Call House Education Committee members and ask them to support SB 43.
SB 43 is a critical tool to protect student privacy and parental rights. As introduced, SB 43 provides that with limited exceptions, no student shall be required to volunteer or submit to a non-academic survey or questionnaire without written consent of a parent or legal guardian.

Several amendments are likely to be introduced. Encourage committee members to accept amendments from Rep. Rick Ladd (one of SB 43’s co-sponsors) and Rep. Glenn Cordelli (who plans to propose an amendment that coordinates with Ladd’s). An amendment from a representative who co-sponsored the underlying bill is likely to be faithful to the bill’s original intent.
As always, be sure phone calls are brief, courteous, and made at reasonable hours. If you leave a message, include your name and town.

SB 44, prohibiting the state from requiring implementation of common core standards.

SB 8, also known as a “Croydon bill,” which would allow a school district to assign a child to another public school in another school district or to an approved private school if there is no public school for the child’s grade in the child’s resident district.
