Girard at Large On Air News Read for July 26, 2017

Manchester Alderman Kevin Cavanaugh, Democrat from Ward One, will be District Sixteen’s next state senator, having beaten former Senator David Boutin, Republican from Hooksett, handily in yesterday’s special election.  The unofficial tally has Cavanaugh with four thousand seven hundred forty-six votes, or just under fifty-five percent and Boutin with three thousand eight hundred fourteen votes, or forty-four percent.  Libertarian Jason Dubrow of Dunbarton received one hundred nine votes or just over one percent.  The election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Scott McGilvray, Democrat from Hooksett.

The victory had Democratic State Party Chair Raymond Buckley crowing as if his party had actually flipped the seat. | More…

Keene Using Goats to Tame Vegetation At Landfill

A New Hampshire city has turned to a herd of hungry goats to tame the vegetation at its closed landfill.

The public works department in Keene said Monday it brought in 30 goats in June to munch on the grass and shrubs at the fenced-in landfill. They are joined by Enzo, a dog tasked with protecting the goats from potential predators. | More…

NH AG releases video, photos of justified officer-involved shooting in Hopkinton

HOPKINTON — The Attorney General’s Office has released videos, dispatch audio and photographs from a private citizen’s cellphone of an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 89 in May.

On May 25, Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald announced that New Hampshire State Police Trooper Michael Arteaga and New London Police Officer James MacKenna were each justified in the use of deadly force when each officer discharged his firearm at Bryan G. Evans, 31, on May 19.

Arteaga spotted a car reported stolen out of Vermont driving south on I-89 around 6:51 p.m. Evans allegedly did not immediately stop for officers but eventually pulled over in the breakdown lane near Exit 6 in Hopkinton. | More…

NH fishermen ask U.S. Supreme Court to hear monitoring case

New Hampshire fishermen fighting for their livelihood are now trying to take their case to the nation’s highest court.

Commercial fishermen said they must pay $700 a day for fishing monitors, people who go out with fishermen and collect data.

The government mandate began seven years ago, but the cost was only recently put on the fishermen. That prompted legal action against the government. | More…

BOW, N.H. (AP) — Democrat Kevin Cavanaugh has won the special election for New Hampshire’s District 16 state Senate seat.

Cavanaugh defeated Republican David Boutin and Libertarian Jason Dubrow on Tuesday.
