Assault Victim: Charge Against NH State Rep Not A Political Ploy

CONCORD, NH — A woman who claims that a local state representative assaulted her last year during a ballot recount at the state archives building in Concord is speaking out about a lawyer’s claim that her complaint is a political ploy – and she is also calling on the alleged perpetrator of the act to resign.

Susan Olsen, a 2nd Amendment advocate from Warner, filed the complaint earlier this year which led to state Rep. Katherine Rogers, D-Concord, being formally charged with simple assault in Concord District Court on Aug. 7, 2017.  | More…

South Carolina Governor Cuts Public Funds to Abortion Clinics

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster (R) has issued an executive order that cuts public funding to abortion clinics in the state.

McMaster demanded that the state’s Medicaid agency ask the “federal government to exclude abortion clinics from the state’s Medicaid provider.”

The Post and Courier reported that the order specifically states that federal funds will not go to “any physician or professional medical practice affiliated with an abortion clinic and operating concurrently with and in the same physical, geographic location or footprint as an abortion clinic.” | More…

Historians warn against rushing to take down statues

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s not just about Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

The national soul-searching over whether to take down monuments to the Confederacy’s demigods has extended to other historical figures accused of wrongdoing, including Christopher Columbus (brutality toward Native Americans), the man for whom Boston’s Faneuil Hall is named (slave trader) and former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo (bigotry).

Historians interviewed by The Associated Press offered varying thoughts about where exactly the line should be drawn in judging someone’s statue-worthiness, but they agreed on one thing: Scrapping a monument is not a decision that should be made in haste during political fervor. | More…

Military Transgender Ban Is Official

Trump’s memo bars transgender people from enlisting, but instructs Secretary of Defense James Mattis to further explore how to handle transgender people currently serving in the armed forces.

The memo also orders the Pentagon to stop paying for gender reassignment surgeries, except in cases that are already in progress to “protect the health of an individual.”| More…

Executive Council agrees to renew women’s prison lease

The Executive Council has agreed to renew the state’s lease with Hillsborough County for continued use of the old county jail in Goffstown as the state’s women’s prison, at a cost of $2.5 million, even though a new $48 million prison for women in Concord is scheduled for completion in a matter of weeks.

The new prison should be ready for occupancy by late October or early November, according to the Department of Corrections, but the department is way behind schedule in hiring the people needed to run it. | More…

Soldier gets 18 months in scheme to send guns to Indonesia

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A U.S. Army soldier who participated in a scheme to buy guns and send them to a security detail for Indonesia’s president and vice president has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison.

Audi Sumilat, of El Paso, Texas, pleaded guilty last year in New Hampshire. Twenty-three guns were recovered. | More…
