Racial Justice Activists Seek Answers on Claremont Boy’s Injuries

A social and racial justice group is calling on the Claremont Police Department to be more forthcoming with information about injuries suffered by an 8-year-old biracial boy last month.

The Valley News reports that a group of teenagers allegedly used racial slurs and placed a rope around the boy’s neck, before pushing him off a picnic table. The Claremont Police Chief told the Valley News that an investigation has been opened, but he could not provide details because the matter involves juveniles.   | More…

Durham Considers Changing the Name of Columbus Day

During the Public Comments section of the Town Council meeting on February 6, 2017, Durham resident Neil Ferris spoke about a movement underway to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. He said the New Hampshire State Legislature should join Vermont in this effort, and could use some nudging on this from Durham. Congressman Proposes Bill to Control Speech

Maryland Congressman Anthony Brown has proposed legislation that would force every American college to define rules for acceptable speech. It includes federal money for small schools that need assistance in meeting the laws reporting and enforcement requirements. Rules that, if not followed could result in schools losing other federal dollars.

The Supreme Court should save us all a lot of bother and drop Mr. Brown a note before he says another word.

NH man crashes into wall, glass doorway, woman at Rochester pharmacy

A woman leaving a pharmacy is now in the hospital after being hit by a car that drove into the building, police said.

Around noon Sept. 8, the Rochester Police Department, Rochester Fire Department and Frisbie EMS responded to CARE Pharmacy for reports that a vehicle had driven into the building.

Upon arrival, the driver of the vehicle, Ryan Vansylvong, 22 of Dover, was found to be semi-alert. Witnesses told police he was having a medical event after the collision. | More…

Claremont Mandates Lead Screenings for Students

The parking lot was overflowing at Claremont’s back-to-school fair this year, held at a playing field just outside of downtown. Families with young kids checked out the fire truck and race cars, and visited booths offering back-to-school info, giveaways and games.

Durham, NH Post Office Painting Called Demeaning

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — For decades, a colorful mural of New Hampshire‘s earliest settlers hauling logs, frolicking through the snow and walking through town has greeted visitors at a post office in the state.

But one image on the 16-panel artwork of a Native American posing menacingly with a settler’s house in the distance — and the words “Cruel Adversity” below it — has sparked controversy in Durham, a mostly white and affluent town that is home to the University of New Hampshire.
