Is N.H.’s Branding Still Focused on the Old Man of the Mountain?

It’s been fourteen years since the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed, but New Hampshire residents are still used to seeing him all over the state. One of listeners is asking, “Why?”

As part of our series Only in NH, in which we answer questions from around the state about New Hampshire oddities, producer Taylor Quimby tries to get to the bottom of that question. | More…

NH think tank estimates $5 per American would pay for nuclear deterrent against North Korea

NASHUA, NH  With North Korea threatening high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against the U.S. electric grid, experts at the New Hampshire-based Foundation for Resilient Societies estimate that a nuclear deterrent can be quickly established for a cost of about $5 per American. Protecting critical transformers with EMP blocking devices will add to North Korea’s uncertainty on whether an EMP attack will succeed or not. This quick and realizable step can buy time for more comprehensive protection of the U.S. electric grid. |More…

NHRTL: Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend For Healing

The Rachel’s Vineyard program is an opportunity to examine your abortion experience, identify the ways that the loss has impacted you in the past and present, and help to acknowledge any unresolved feelings that many individuals struggle with after abortion. Because of the emotional numbness and secrecy that often surrounds an abortion experience, conflicting emotions both during and after the event may remain unresolved. These buried feelings can surface later and may be symptoms of post-abortion trauma. | More…

Mark Steyn on DACA: Dreams, Delusions and Duplicity

As we had cause to reflect on Labor Day, no developed nation in the year 2017 needs mass immigration. To judge from the press coverage, the average DACA beneficiary is a twelve-year-old beatific moppet. In fact, Obama amnestied those aged 30 and under in 2012 – which means some of them are 36 now, which means (given that they’re either undocumented or using fraudulent documents) some of these dreaming moppets are in their forties. No matter. Those who aren’t telegenic infants are, we’re assured, serving in the US Army or helping with Harvey relief. As Tucker Carlson scoffed last night, the proportion of Dreamers serving in the military is tiny. And as a statistic it might be more useful if we could compare it to the number of Dreamers serving in, say, MS-13. | More…

New Hampshire bankruptcy filings jump in August

Eight New Hampshire businesses filed for bankruptcy protection in August – twice as many that filed for bankruptcy in June and July combined.

August wasn’t a good month when it came to bankruptcy for individuals either. Some 160 New Hampshire households and businesses filed, 19 more than July and 26 more than August of 2016, a more than 18 percent annual increase. Indeed, there were three more filings in August 2017 than August 2014, when the state was still clawing its way of the recession, though still less than a third of the number filed in 2010, when New Hampshire was still stuck deep inside it. | More…

Was Barack Obama Lying When He Called DACA A ‘Temporary Stopgap?’

I wrote earlier today about how the problem with DACA is bifurcated into the original immigration dilemma and the abuse of power by President Obama. That double problem is made even less workable by the extremists on both sides refusing to leave behind absurd notions and assumptions. Count Obama among the extremists. The former President took to Facebook to whine about his problematic executive order being rescinded, an executive order he once described as “not a permanent fix.” | More…

MERRIMACK, N.H. — Storm chasers from New Hampshire are heading toward Hurricane Irma Wednesday morning, and they’re making it a family affair. “It’s a really powerful hurricane, so we will watch it come in, and if it’s that powerful, we won’t be near the water,” said Ron Moore, of Merrimack. “We’ll be in a safe place. We’ll be in a bunker.” | More…
