NH House panel to weigh energy-efficiency charge opt-out bill

Should New Hampshire businesses be able to opt out of paying for a utility’s energy-efficiency programs, even if they have benefited in the past and might benefit from them in the future?

That’s what state Rep. Michael Vose, R-Epping, is proposing in an amendment to House Bill 317, pertaining to the state’s relatively new Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS), which will be considered by the House Science Technology Energy committee in a public hearing and a possible vote on Wednesday. | Keep Reading at NHBR

Census Data Points to Higher Rural Poverty Rates Around New Hampshire

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau points to a low statewide poverty rate while showing higher adult and childhood poverty rates in rural communities.

The U. S. Census Bureau American Community Survey on Oct. 19 released poverty estimates, which were based on surveying 20,000 New Hampshire residents. An analysis by the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute, a nonpartisan organization, found four counties with at least 10 percent of their population living below the poverty line. The total percentage of Granite Staters living under the poverty line is 7.3 percent. | Keep Reading at NH Journal

New Hampshire won’t join Clean Power plan suit – at least not yet

New Hampshire is not rushing to join several neighboring states in threatening to sue the federal government over the Environmental Protection Agency’s announced its intention to repeal the Clean Power Plan.

“We are moderating the rulemaking process, looking at what impacts, if any, it has on our state and what actions we might take,” said Associate Attorney General James Vara, “The final rule has not come out yet, so it is not fully baked.” | Read more at NHBR

HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER REACTS TO HOUSE DEMOCRAT PROPOSALS FOR SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE

In Merrimack, Homework No Longer Counts as a Graded Assignment

There is a growing debate in New Hampshire and nationally about the value of homework, and educators are responding. Merrimack School District implemented a new homework protocol at the beginning of this school year.
