Henniker seeks resolution of civil lawsuit filed after officer-involved shooting

Officials in Henniker argue a federal trial is not necessary to resolve the civil claims brought against them after a town police officer shot a man in the elbow in 2014.

Instead, the town is once again asking a U.S. District Court judge to rule on the merits of the civil lawsuit, arguing the basic facts of the case are undisputed.

Aaron Cadman, 20, brought six civil claims against the town and Henniker Officer Stephen Dennis in May 2016. Cadman, who died of a drug overdose that June, was seeking $5 million in damages, claiming he suffered emotional and physical injuries as a result of Dennis’s actions Nov. 26, 2014. His family has since moved forward with the suit on his behalf. *| More…

Eyewitness Account of Confrontation With Banana Peel That Ended University Retreat

On August 31st GraniteGrok posted a report about a banana peel with the power to put the full meaning in the word retreat. An Ole Miss Greek Life event came to a screeching (weeping, horribly terrifying) halt (followed by a full retreat) when a banana peel was found in a tree.

In a letter to the editor, Makala McNeil and her sorority sister share the details of this life-changing event and (of course) how it made them feel. | More…

Checking the checklists: Bill Gardner did his job

In reviewing local voter checklists for submission to the President’s election fraud commission, Secretary of State Bill Gardner discovered that election officials in 42 New Hampshire communities had improperly written private information, including phone numbers and the addresses of domestic violence victims, on the sheets. Gardner notified the Attorney General’s Office and put the brakes on turning the data over to Washington.

The response should have been praise. Instead, it was political opportunism. *| More…

Manchester woman accused in Rwandan genocide denied appeal of her immigration status

As the files and records of this case conclusively show that the petitioner is entitled to no relief, the motion is denied.

Petitioner has not made a substantial showing of the denial of a constitutional right. The court, therefore, declines to issue a certificate of appealability. 28 U.S.C. §2253(c)(2)(1); Rule 11, Rules Governing Section 2255 Proceedings. | Full Decision

The gun industry’s woes a boon for buyers

Financial advisers warned last week gun stocks could be too risky to hold, as major manufacturers and retailers report depressed earnings and lowered expectations — without a tangible end in sight.

It’s good news for guns owners, who can expect the rock bottom prices to linger around a bit longer, even as the industry slides back into its historically strongest seasons. | More…

Possible tariff puts NH solar firms on edge

The possibility of a major trade tariff on photovoltaic cells could eclipse much of the nation’s growing solar energy industry, especially in New Hampshire where it is already trying to overcome two state regulatory barriers.

The U.S. International Trade Commission is expected to issue its first ruling on a tariff request on Sept. 22. It was made by two foreign-owned manufacturers seeking to impose both protective tariffs and a floor price on photovoltaic cells and modules. The mere threat of a tariff has already driven up prices by 15 to 25 percent, according to Sam Lavallee, director of financing for ReVision Energy, a Brentwood-based company with offices in Concord, NH, Massachusetts, and Maine. | More…

Swastika painted on Portsmouth tree investigated

PORTSMOUTH — Police are investigating the spray-painting of a swastika on an Osprey Landing tree, alarming a resident who discovered it. The incident could be prosecuted as a hate crime, said Lt. Michael Maloney.

The swastika was reported to police on Tuesday, but could have been painted before that time because the tree is not in a highly-visible location, Maloney said. An initial report was taken Tuesday and officers returned to canvas the neighborhood on Wednesday, he said. | More…
