Milk is such a presence in our lives we probably take it for granted. Thank goodness, then, for today, World Milk Day — one of those weird food holidays which are sometimes invented by interest groups to push a certain product. Regardless of the so-called holiday’s origins, let’s take this opportunity to delve into some of the ways people appreciate milk in their daily lives.

Questions the GOP Executive Councilors Should Ask Harriet Miers, er Bobbie Hantz Marconi, But Won’t

The Executive Council, which must confirm the nomination, will hold a “public hearing” on the nomination.  Unlike hearings before the United States Senate, where a finite number of witnesses are called by each Party, the “public hearing” held by the Executive Council allows any member of the public to speak.

This makes hearings on judicial nominees before the Executive Council essentially a farce.  Judges should not be nominated based on their popularity with the public, but based upon criteria I discussed in a prior post: (1) Judicial Philosophy (2) Intellectual capacity (3) Experience (4) Integrity and (5) Demeanor.

SCORES OF FARM WORKERS, ACTIVISTS MARCH ON BEN and JERRY’S

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Scores of dairy farm workers and activists marched Saturday on a Ben & Jerry’s factory to push for better pay and living conditions on farms that provide milk for the ice cream maker that takes pride in its social activism.

Protesters said Ben & Jerry’s agreed two years ago to participate in the so-called Milk with Dignity program, but the company and worker representatives have yet to reach an agreement. | More…

Scientists tracking earthquake swarm in northern Yellowstone Park

The small earthquake that struck Yellowstone National Park on Thursday night was part of a swarm that has been hitting the area since Monday, scientists say.

The quake was centered near West Yellowstone, but was also felt by people in Gardiner and Bozeman.

“As of 10 a.m. this morning we had located a total of 235 earthquakes in the area,” said Jamie Farrell, University of Utah research professor of seismology. | More…
