The pace of the opioid crisis seems to have slowed a bit.  On Friday, just shy of halfway through the month, Manchester Fire Department Emergency Services Officer Christopher Hickey released stats showing there’d been thirty-two overdoses and one death thus far.  That compares with eighty-one overdoses and eight deaths for the month of July last year.  If the current trend holds, it would reflect a significant improvement over last July.

New Jersey hiker remains missing in White Mountains of New Hampshire

Three weeks after he headed into the wilderness with a full backpack, a 53-year-old hiker from Brick Township, New Jersey remains missing in New Hampshire’s rugged White Mountains.

Gregory Auriemma was last seen June 24 at the White Mountains Hostel in Conway, where he stayed as a guest, and was due back from his trip July 5. He is an attorney in private practice, and chair of the Ocean County group of the Sierra Club of New Jersey, according to a local report. | More…

Manchester VA Director, Chief of Staff Removed Pending Investigation

Two top officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manchester have been removed pending a review of conditions alleged by a Boston Globe report detailing unsanitary operating rooms and allegations of substandard care.

Medical Center Director Danielle Ocker will be replaced by Alfred Montoya, current director of the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont. A replacement for the Manchester VA’s Chief of Staff James Schlosser has not yet been announced. | More…

NYU librarian laments ‘fatigue’ from ‘presence of white people’

A New York University librarian recently felt compelled to pen a blog post bemoaning the “racial fatigue” she experiences “in the presence of white people” following an academic conference.

Two Pastors Sue Coca-Cola For Alleged Harm to African-American Community

Two pastors have filed suit in Washington D. C. against Coca-Cola claiming that the sugary-soda pop kills more black people than “the streets.”

Citing purposeful advertising “deception” that “obscures” the connection between sugary soft drinks, obesity, and other ailments, the complaint alleges that Coca-Cola intentionally “misleads and deceives” consumers about the horrors of drinking their product.  Indeed, one of the pastors claims that “it is a matter of life and death in our communities.” | More…
