Liberty House in Manchester gets new director

MANCHESTER — Manchester native Jeff Nelson took over control of the Liberty House veterans’ housing community on Monday, replacing Executive Director Keith Howard.

“While I am not a veteran, I have had family members who served in the military, including an uncle who died as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II,” Nelson said in a statement. “I have a deep regard and respect for those who have served our country, and consider it an honor and privilege to serve those who have served.” *| More…

Defending Bitcoiners from government: lessons from the Free State Project

For those of you freedom-folk who have been hiding under a mining rig for the last half-decade, there is one other thing happening in the liberty movement which rivals Bitcoin in effectiveness. It’s the Free State Project. Bitcoin’s focus is monetary; that of the “free staters” is geographical. Their experiences – especially their mistakes – provide a unique lesson in what happens when a libertarian endeavor becomes prominent and established… as the crypto movement is beginning to. | More…

Manchester aldermen OK six-month smoking ban in city parks

MANCHESTER — Aldermen on Tuesday night approved a six-month ban on smoking in five downtown city parks and public spaces — Veterans Memorial, Victory, Bronstein and Pulaski Parks, along with Stanton Plaza.

Mayor Ted Gatsas proposed the six-month ban after several aldermen questioned whether the proposed ordinance is too broad, for example, forbidding someone to light up a cigar on the Derryfield Country Club golf course.

“There are going to be people seeing somebody smoking and they will want a cop to come and issue a violation against them. There is a potential here for this to get out of control,” Alderman-at-Large Dan O’Neil said. | More…

In Keene, Hassan defends Medicaid expansion bill

Days after the release of a critical letter from a federal agency, U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan is defending the Medicaid expansion plan she signed into law as New Hampshire’s governor.

In an interview in Keene Monday morning, Hassan, a Democrat, said the expansion program — and its funding structure — was vetted by outside legal experts before it was signed and that it complies with federal law. And she pushed back at the federal agency, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), for its criticism of New Hampshire’s arrangement.

“This is a deliberate attempt by the Trump administration to undermine our bipartisan Medicaid expansion program,” Hassan said in response to questions following a tour of the Corning Specialty Materials plant in Keene. *| More…
