Sen. Sanders’ Wife Tried Evicting Disabled Group Home Residents after Closing Shady College Deal

Jane was president of the troubled college from 2004 to 2011 and in 2010, she had an ambitious plan to expand the campus by 33 acres, despite low enrollment and financial difficulties. The then-president of Burlington College drastically overstated donation amounts in loan applications, according to the Vermont news website that broke the story, to obtain a $10 million loan. Jane indicated there was $2.6 million in pledged donations but the school only got $676,000 in four years.

The loan went through, some allege after her husband’s senatorial office pressured the bank to approve it, and Jane masterminded a deal to purchase an undeveloped, 32-acre parcel of land and a 77,000-square-foot facility from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. The purchase included a facility that served as a group home for disabled people and, under the terms of the deal, Jane was supposed to negotiate the transfer of the disabled residents before the school took over the property. Instead, Jane tried to kick the disabled people out of their group home, records obtained by Judicial Watch show.  |More…

A look back at New Hampshire’s legislative session

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Republican lawmakers didn’t give their new governor a warm welcome this session, but he sent them off to their summer recess with a smile.

Less than two months after the session began in January, the House rejected legislation targeting labor unions despite aggressive lobbying from newly-elected Republican Gov. Chris Sununu. The defeat of the so-called right-to-work legislation revealed a rift among Republicans, who also were split two months later when they turned to the state budget. In April, a small group of conservative Republicans joined with Democrats to defeat an $11.9 billion two-year budget in an unprecedented move that further strained relations between House leadership and the governor’s office. | More…

Patients With Mental Health Disorders Receive More Opioids, Study Suggests

People with anxiety and depression are disproportionately prescribed painkillers. That’s what new research from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center suggests, adding a complex layer to the opioid epidemic ravaging the United States and encouraging calls from New Hampshire’s congressional delegation to not move forward with the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

The findings, which appear in the July issue of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, show that nearly 19 percent of the 38.6 million American adults with mental health disorders use prescription opioids compared to only 5 percent of those without a disorder. Adults with depression and anxiety receive 51 percent of the 115 million opioid prescriptions distributed each year in the U.S., the study found. | More…
