Four city labor contracts up for vote tonight in Manchester

MANCHESTER — Aldermen will consider final approval of four labor contracts tonight, with Mayor Ted Gatsas questioning how they will be funded, while a key alderman praised one for putting a crack in the long-criticized Yager-Decker pay scale.

The contracts cover police support workers such as dispatchers, and workers in the welfare department, library and airport.

All contracts would provide 2 percent cost-of-living raises for this year and next. Three of the contracts could increase employee contributions toward health care, raising the employee share of premiums from 15 to 17 1/2 percent. *| More…

OP-ED: There is no place for hatred in this nation

As an elected official, I guess I am supposed to be able to make some profound statement about what is happening to our country.  All I can tell you this has been building for several years. We all saw it escalating. Looting, and riots began happening so often that it was no longer news. Free speech was being shut down across the country, and the freedom of expression was being replaced by freedom of violence.

The liberty of a free nation comes with a great responsibility.  As George Washington stated, “Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people.”  We are falling very short of living up to that standard. It is time to take a hard look and ask ourselves if we are we being good stewards of this great nation?  The answer is pretty clear, but not for the reasons that some may think. | More…

The publication, now in its 200th year, isn’t afraid to go out on a limb with long-term weather forecasts that rely on a formula founder David Young first used in 1818 that utilizes sunspots, tidal action and other factors shunned by modern scientists. | More…
