Senate Bill to establish an Ombudsman to resolve complaints
NEW HAMPSHIRE’S right-to-know law is meant to ensure transparency and accountability in our government, but citizens often run into roadblocks attempting to get state and local agencies to live up to the letter and intent of the law.
Currently, the right-to-know law (RSA 91-A) requires citizens to file a petition in Superior Court to resolve any right-to-know grievance they may have with a public body or agency. This requirement establishes a high burden and cost on all parties. | Keep Reading at Right to Know NH
UNH to cut 18 lecturer positions
DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire says it will not renew the contracts of 18 lecturers in the university’s liberal arts college.

Catherine Moran, president of the UNH lecturers union, called the move “radical and dramatic.” | Keep Reading at the Seattle Times
Still a boondoggle: Sununu flip-flops on commuter rail
As an executive councilor, Chris Sununu called the Capitol Corridor project a boondoggle, and voted against a $4 million “study” that would pay for initial design work and financial planning for extending commuter rail from Nashua to Concord.
As governor, Sununu has included the $4 million in his recommendations for the state’s 10-year transportation plan.
He was right the first time.
Nothing has changed, but Sununu says he was persuaded by the potential benefits of commuter rail as the state put together its pitch for Amazon to locate its second headquarters in New Hampshire.
But nothing about that project, or Nashua’s plan to bring in private commuter rail service, justifies the $300 million Capitol Corridor project, which would require hefty annual subsidies from New Hampshire taxpayers. *| Keep Reading at the Union Leader
A church’s ‘core mandate’ must be pro-choice to access summer jobs grant
LONDON, Ont. — Canada’s employment minister says churches and other religious groups are eligible for a federal grant to hire summer students as long as their core mandate agrees with access to abortion.
33 Percent Tax Increase
The Belknap County board of commissioners have proposed a budget for 2018 which will have a whopping 33% increase on your property taxes payable to the county. Fortunately, the commissioners don’t have the power to make the appropriation. The county delegation has that authority, and they will meet on Monday January 22, 2018 to discuss and possibly vote on the appropriation. | Keep Reading at Lakes Region Porcupines
Oprah’s NH cheerleader
To the Editor: When Jennifer Horn chaired the Republican State Committee a few years back, she appeared well qualified to function essentially as a mindless cheerleader for whatever policies and candidates the party would bring forth. But Jennifer has since moved on to other things, and is now a cheerleader for Oprah Winfrey as a potential Democratic candidate for president in 2020.
Indeed, the Horn column published on the Union Leader’s editorial page on Jan. 10 lacked only a photo of jubilant Jennifer waving pom poms and wearing a sweater bearing a giant “O” for Oprah. *|Read more at the Union Leader
