Under the Obama administration the Justice Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission had declared that sexual orientation and “gender orientation” were protected classes under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This led to the federal government suing North Carolina over its law requiring people to use a sex appropriate bathroom.
