Michigan Capital Rescinds Calling Itself ‘Sanctuary City’

Michigan’s capital city on Wednesday reversed a decision to call itself a “sanctuary city” that protects immigrants, bowing to pressure from a business community concerned that the term would draw unwanted attention to Lansing from President Donald Trump’s administration and cost the city federal funding.

The City Council voted 5-2 to reverse course just nine days after unanimously deciding to call Lansing a sanctuary. The term “sanctuary city” has no legal definition and varies in application, but it generally refers to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with U.S. immigration officials. More…

NH Rents Expected to Rise

A new national snapshot of rental housing costs suggests that New Hampshire will see a continued creep upward in its rents this year. In the state’s surveys, rental costs have been on an upward trend, year after year, said Jane Law, communications manager at New Hampshire Housing. In the past five years, “the trends have been upward,” Law said.
“On a statewide basis, the vacancy rate has been dropping for a number of years,” she said, meaning fewer units going for higher prices. More…

Keene Officials Propose Increasing Certain Inspection, Permit Fees

Keene public works officials are seeking to raise fees for engineering inspections and excavation permits for the first time in more than a quarter of a century.

And if approved by the City Council, the change would result in those fees, for people doing projects that temporarily or permanently affect city property, increasing by nearly double to nearly triple what they are now. Keep Reading…

More Dying from Fentanyl than Heroin

According to new numbers from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 18 people have died because of fentanyl. There have been no deaths caused by heroin alone in 2017.

A total of two people have died because of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl. Eighty-six deaths are still pending toxicology reports. More…

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day is observed annually on April 12th.  Listed in a reader’s opinion poll, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are among one of the top comfort foods in the United States.

According to food historians, cooked bread and cheese is an ancient food, enjoyed across the world in many cultures.  The United States modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became easily available. Bum Deal? The Butt of jokes. Uranus getting a bit of love. Jeesh.

Unlike its more glamorous relatives Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus gets a bit of a bum deal when it comes to planetary popularity; often the butt of jokes thanks to its slightly inelegant name.

This is, in our opinion, is grossly unfair, so it’s good to see Uranus getting a bit of love thanks to some powerful, naturally-occurring auroras that were spotted by the Hubble Telescope. More…

Tired of daylight saving time, lawmakers look to ‘lock the clock’

Harwood, 63, has a slight obsession with time and an opinion that we should stop messing with it.

He lives in one of the two states _ the other is Hawaii _ that don’t change their clocks twice a year for daylight saving time. And Harwood has started to wonder why other states do. In the last few years, he has become one of just a few hobbyists who are tracking the movement in states to either abolish daylight saving time or stay on it year-round. More…

Calls for More Energy Sources to Lower Costs in NH
